Fourth Wing
by Rebecca Yarros
4.5
Ok, so I really thought I was going to hate-read this and rip it apart. With all of the SJM girlies loving this book, I figured it would be a similar level of badly-written and lacking in plot - but Fourth Wing blew me away. I genuinely had such a good time reading this book. I loved the dragons, the war college, the romance, everything! I had so much fun! There are definitely flaws in the writing and some cringe-worthy moments but I went into the book knowing it wasn't going to be like the fantasy I regularly read (thoughtful, prose-heavy and influenced heavily by politics and anti-colonial rhetoric) so it was easy to forgive the small pitfalls and just enjoy it for what it is.
I can't wait to read the rest of the series!
I thought it was smart that Yarros told us this was a deadly college atmosphere (I mean on the cover it literally says 'Fly...or die') and she didn't shy away from that. A lot of characters die, though we don't care about any of them. There is only one death in the whole book that really made me feel something because Yarros didn't flesh out any of the other characters who died. I do think this is a weakness of the book for sure, but after reading many a book where the main character is supposed to be an assassin or the world is supposed to be deadly but no one ever dies, I appreciated that Yarros delivered on her promise.
