Refugee by Alan Gratz
4.0

At first I gave this five stars, but after thinking about it for 24 hours I came back and dropped it to four. I wish I could give 4.5. I work with refugees; it’s my job. This is a wonderful, important book, and it does what it should do considering the age group for which it was written. My problem is this: I have personal knowledge of the people symbolized here and the long term effects of being displaced. Gratz realistically couldn’t put the full horror of reality into this book and keep it age appropriate, but the result is that pieces of the story just don’t ring true. Certain bits are tied up too simply and too neatly. This is an excellent introduction to refugees and asylees - a foot in the door - but it’s important that the conversation doesn’t end here.
