La Mémoire de Babel by Christelle Dabos

3.0

I hate to say I didn’t enjoy this one nearly as much as the first two. I went into it really hopeful because the first few chapters indicate a new adventurous direction for Ophelia, but that almost immediately gets shut down with the whole training academy angle.

The new characters aren’t nearly as compelling as those in clairdelune and Ophelia seems to have stagnated if not regressed as a character. Nearly every decision she makes in this book made me roll my eyes. It’s like she didn’t learn a thing from all her time at the court and is somehow more timid and indecisive rather than confident. The development of the romance plot is like pulling teeth.

The overall God and the Other plot develops rather slowly in this one, which indicates to me that the last book will probably be very dense and rushed to tie off all the loose ends. I’m hopeful it will be at least for fun than this one. I think this book could have edited to half its length and added to the begging of the last book.
