daianacric 's review for:
South of the Border, West of the Sun
by Haruki Murakami
Hear me out: this book is just a reiteration of Norwegian Wood.
The main male characters from both books- Hajime and Watanabe share the same form of fragile masculinity which needs to be carefully groomed by the 'manic pixie girl' female.
In both books, women are concepts. They represent a lesson, a realization for the male character, their personality revolves around the man's needs, his desires, what he needs her to be.
Once the lesson was learned, once he figures himself out through the experience he had with this woman, she completely vanishes from the scene. Her existence was necessary only to help him discover himself.
Not to mention that Hajime didn't reveal the name of his two girls throughout the whole book, but remarked the name and series of each car he was interested in.
I will write a few quotes from the book, just to prove my point:
'What confused and disappointed me, though, was that I could never discover within her something special that existed just for me.'
'I'd lied to her before when I slept with other women. But I never felt I was deceiving her. Those were just harmless flings.'
