Gideon the Ninth

Not for me. This has been recommended to me quite a few times as a SFF fan--I bought it because the shop assistant recommended it, but it veers more towards horror and it didn't tick any of my boxes other than competent protagonist.
I found the first section very slow. Sad and slow.
I did not like Harrow. Gideon's relationship with Harrow reminded me of a child sticking with her primary school bully when they start high school, because better the devil you know. I'm glad this wasn't enemies-to-lovers and that the author didn't gloss over the horrors of their relationship as much as I was worried they would.
The image on the cover depicts Gideon wearing makeup she hates, wielding a weapon she hates, with a name she hates. Wearing sunglasses because daylight hurts. It looks so powerful and yet.
So much death. So much gore. So much violence. I skipped a lot of the big boss scene (which took 30+ pages at the end).
