The Wave in the Mind: Talks and Essays on the Writer, the Reader, and the Imagination by Ursula K. Le Guin

5.0

Well that was a joy to read! "The Wave in the Mind" (a quote of Virginia Woolf's) is a collection of talks and essays on reading and writing. I loved the musings of rhythm in prose and poetry (which suddenly seemed to illuminate my mind in a way that my teacher was trying to tell me years ago and never quite managed) and the fact that she can take Tolkien seriously (what a relief). Ursula K Le Guin has many wise and true words to offer and there was plenty to think about in each essay. Her art and craft shine through and make for an enjoyable and engaging read. I do now want to go and read some of the books she discusses and there is a brilliant anecdote of the sum of her sailing experience right at the end that had me laughing on the train this morning...
