This was a read aloud with my boys and I thought it was just OK. They liked it, I didn’t. It was such a slog for me to get through—I thought it was so boring. I can appreciate nature conservation, but there are so many other books that are much more readable. I’m not sure why this was awarded a Newberry.

Also, hate the fat-phobic language and “classic” dumb, fat bully. I realize this book was written before that was really recognized and it’s no worse than Harry Potter, but it is such a tired trope that has not aged well in the last 20 years.
