Batman: Arkham Asylum - A Serious House on Serious Earth
by Grant Morrison
Even though this is the graphic novel with such a powerful and enduring legacy, the writing and themes didn't really click with me. The dialogue felt a lot like psychological posturing with no real basis, even though there were hints of interest (Two-Face's treatment in particular was original). Considering so much of the story is supposed to be centered around the psychology of Batman villains and the Joker in particular, seeing so many false, pretentious ideas being thrown around was a little cringey.
The adventure itself was fine, and it was great to see the basis for the Arkham Batman games I love so much and the Arkham legacy and history that has persevered throughout the Batman comics years later. The art seems to polarize people, but I have always been fond of abstract art and the stylistic interpretations of both Batman and his villains fit the nightmarish tone Morrison was going for.
