The quality definitely dipped in comparison to the first book of the series. However, I liked being able to tell that this book was very much about Sadie. The first book was about Carter getting a grip on things and making sense of all the new information while Sadie played a stronger part as a really important background character. I think their roles were switched in this book. It was awesome seeing Sadie come into her type of magic a little bit more with all the spell reading she did and her growing confidence. Her crushes on way older boys is STILL alarming (she’s 13 now but Walt is confirmed 16…an 8th grader and a 10th grader. Icky.). HOWEVER, I think the saving grace of it is that Sadie is in a much higher position than Walt. He’s the student [[who’s dying and probably hasn’t lived a lot of life to know what manipulating a younger girl looks like]] and he’s very clearly enamored by HER power. She’s not an object that he wants, I think he actually respects her as a person. So for that, their romance isn’t like “never reading this again” or “bashing it online” icky.
