Grateful American: A Journey from Self to Service by Gary Sinise

I've had this book sitting on my shelf for a bit but never read it. My dad always asks me if I have any books he can read so I gave him this one thinking he might like it.

He has dementia and doesn't remember this actor but he loves anything involving the military. I saw him crying while reading this book and I went to make sure he was ok. All he could say was this book was tearing him up because he knew people who fought in the the Vietnam War. I didn't read the book so I couldn't really talk to him about what he was reading at the time.

When he was done reading the entire book he handed it back and told me it was the best book he had ever read. Not sure how true that is considering he can't remember a lot of the books he reads anymore. Even so, it made me move this book up on my list so I could see why he cried and why he enjoyed it so much.

I know where he cried as soon as I got there -- all of chapter 5. I didn't cry myself but I definitely got choked up because I hate the reminder that Americans turned on our soldiers. I can't believe there was ever a time veterans were so hated. It breaks my heart.
