before going into this book, i knew i was going to get my heart crushed. i just didn’t know to what extent.
jude, willem, malcolm, and jb — alongside harold, julia, richard and andy — have etched themselves deeply into my heart. i had to remind myself several times that these are not real people. this is just fiction. however, this didn’t stop me from feeling the pain too vividly.
the first part of the book, admittedly, was a snooze fest. it seemed filled with unnecessary filler scenes and chapters that the story could have done without, yet still conveyed its heart-wrenching narrative. on the flip side, perhaps these mundane, seemingly uninteresting details were what contributed to my feelings of attachment to these characters. i absorbed so many trivial aspects of their lives that i felt intimately connected to them, akin to my closest friends.
as i closed the book, one overarching question consumed my thoughts:
how can you save someone who doesn’t wish to be saved?
