Confessions of a Mask
by Yukio Mishima
One of the most disturbing novels I have ever read, yet one of the best novels I have ever read. Yukio Mishima has such a beautiful way with words and his work is political and sublime. This book is about a boy named Kochan who is living in postwar Japan and must come to terms with his sexuality. It is a book that makes one feel secluded, repressed, and emotional; the words stab in the heart and make you feel cornered. I cannot help but feel bad for Kochan as well as Sonoko, a character in the book Kochan meets and has a relationship with. I loved this book and cannot stop thinking about the last couple of pages; which are agonizing and contentious. A stellar book by the powerhouse is Yukio Mishima.
