The Midwich Cuckoos by John Wyndham

4.0

Hey fellas, women just be hysterical like that sometimes, amirite?

This is a book about what happens when your bodily autonomy gets taken away from you and a whole village of women is forced to carry a baby to term. Except it's told through the point of view of all the level-headed, noble men in the village who are so brave to stand beside them.

Honestly, it's super dated and 'of it's time', so to read this you have to suspend big disbelief and forgive it a multitude of sins including, but not limited to, rampant sexism, off-handed racism, offensive language, xenophobia to the extreme... But once you put all that aside, it is an interesting little piece of period sci-fi.

I haven't watched the film "The Village of the Damned", but it's next on my list. I'm super curious as to how a film took some of the more complex nuances of this book and put it into a (for then) blockbuster movie, so we'll see.

Rated 4 stars because I really, really like speculative sci-fi and I thought this one was well written. The 4 star rating is not a reflection of my agreement with literally anything in this book.
