If You Kept a Record of Sins by Andrea Bajani

5.0

This slim book tells the story of a man's whole relationship with his absent mother, using spare words and lots of flashback to fill in the emotional blanks. I love this kind of story, which I'll call contemporary European for lack of a better descriptor. It's a heavy story, but not a fat book, and when you finish it you'll find yourself thinking about it for many days thereafter. The conclusion, as in stories like these, is for you to determine.
