Poverty, by America by Matthew Desmond

4.0

a really important and well argued/researched book. my favorite aspect was the tone. it was clear that this author is furious with the state of our country, as we all should be. the desolate and disparaging conditions we expect the poor to live in and through is deplorable, especially for a country such as ours; touting land of the free, but only to some. the author points out that anybody above a certain threshold of wealth and income is in such a position due to our country’s terrible financial choices and because of our reliance on those below the threshold. our country’s rich are so wealthy in part due to their exploitation of the poor and not paying taxes we are all expected to pay, therefore reducing the public sphere to its current saddened state. the points deducted are due to the strong economical jargon that i believe confused the argument as a layman reading it. i highly recommend this book for all Americans, it was eye opening and well argued.
