At the Water's Edge
by Sara Gruen
General Thoughts: Wow! This book was so unexpected. At first, a couple of spoiled rich Americans during WWII. But then slowly it grew into something much more. It was special to watch Maddie grow into her own self, come to her own realizations, and then take control of her own life. Despite the slow prose, this book held my attention and heart before I even knew it did.
Characters: 5/5 - They were realistic and filled with emotion and life.
Atmosphere/Setting: 5/5 - The way that Gruen wrote the WWII world in Scotland was so well done.
Writing Style: 4.5/5 - It was slow, and there were times when I thought maybe of giving up, but something kept pulling me in.
Plot: 5/5 - Reading the description and then the first 50%, I had no idea how this was going to all come together but it did. Slowly with one play at a time.
Intrigue: 4.5/5 - At times my interest did wane, but something - Gruen’s writing - kept pulling me back in.
Logic: 5/5 - It all made painfully logical sense.
Enjoyment: 5/5 - The more I think about this book, the more I love it.
Total: 34/7 = 4.85
Spice Rating: 2.5/5 - There is some spice, but it’s mostly sexual tension and/or kissing. Only one or two truly spicy scenes.
