Empire of Ivory by Naomi Novik
3.0

I wanted to really give this book 2 stars, but I feel I'm partly to blame for how little I enjoyed reading this. I read the first book in the series and enjoyed it enough to be willing to read others in the series. My bookstore only had the fourth installment, so I completely skipped the 2nd and 3rd books because I didn't feel like seeking them out. However, with that being said, this book took way longer to read than it should have because of the complete lack of interest in characters that were already liked and developed in prior stories.

The story line, if you can even call it that, was segmented in a way that made each new "problem" completely disconnected from the last and felt just thrown in there for the sake of taking up enough pages to make a full book. And the ending felt rushed and left as a "cliffhanger" because so much fluff was thrown into the rest of the book that it seemed like the author realized that it just needed to end. Only about halfway through the book, I agreed. It just needed to end. There was enough action in the last third of the book where I feel like 3 stars is fair, but I am wholly unsatisfied after dragging myself through those 400 pages.
