Liesl & Po
by Lauren Oliver
Liesl is a young girl whose father has just died of a long illness and her stepmother keeps her permanently locked in the attic -- if you're thinking this sounds a bit like Cinderella, you'd be right -- Oliver might as well have called this book Cinderella and the Fairy Ghost. Po, the other title character, is a ghost (we and it don't know if it is a boy or a girl) and it has a pet companion named Bundle which we don't know if it is a dog or a cat (confused yet?). They play the role of fairy godmother, helping her escape her attic tower and go on a quest to bury her father's ashes... which seems a little morbid for a children's story.
I have to say I've read Oliver's other three offerings: Before I Fall, and then the two Delirium books: Delirium and Pandemonium, and all three of them were absolutely AMAZING. But, they were intended for an older audience, and I think her writing was much sharper and more descriptive and completely engaging. This book just fell flat in my opinion.
