WHAT?! I was not at all prepared for the journey this book took me on. The suspense, the themes, the character development, THE TWISTS! The end of this had me staring into the middle distance. I WAS NOT READY! Now I desperately want to read the next one but I also don't think I could bear another cliff hanger. There is all this allusion to scripture, and I'm pretty sure to the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe even though I haven't read it. There are these deep conversation about resisting evil and how pervasive it is. The characters are so deeply and richly complicated. There are layers upon layers of symbolism and foreshadowing. I can see this becoming one of those series that permeates the culture, and I'm honestly surprised it hasn't yet.
