Shadow of the Moon by M.M. Kaye
5.0

M. M. Kaye evoked a vanished world in her books on India. But she presented a world that had a reality based on the detailed knowledge she absorbed from her family who had lived, worked and died in the Raj.

In Shadow of the Moon (the title only makes sense towards the end of the book) she tells an unusual love story but she also provides an account of the Indian Mutiny (as the British referred to it) that is compelling and plausible. The character of Winter, the heroine, is unusual and the longish historical introduction to the book is necessary to understand her psychology. Alex is also well crafted as the Assistant Commissioner who perceives the coming storm but is not believed.
I think this book is not currently in print - but it is worth searching for if you have enjoyed other books by Kaye. Highly recommended.
