We Can Do Better Than This: 35 Voices on the Future of LGBTQ+ Rights by Amelia Abraham

3.0

Really thought provoking essays from a variety of voices and identities which was great. My personal favourites were "Know thyself or don't" by Naoirse Dolan, "Pregnancy beyond gender" by Levi Hord, "Pronouns as portals" by Bobbi Salvor Menuez and "When it comes to gender, you're right" by Kate Bornstein. I felt some of the pieces felt a little repetitive covering very similar points on similar themes. I personally would have liked more of a focused academic approach that included personal accounts. I appreciate that not all the contributors are writers, but as a result I struggled to connect to some of the writing styles. However, it was important that these voices were heard in their words so I respect the decision. I definitely learnt a lot and finished the book feeling eager to do my part to drive some progress in the community.
