As someone who has her own fair share of 'mammy issues', this book hit me and held me in all of the best ways. There's a line toward the end of the book, where Janette summarises how missing her mother is still possible, despite everything that happened by saying "[a]nd finally, the grief that surfaces now when I miss her and start to cry because I do still miss her, and start to cry." and that has stayed with me since I read it. This book is impactful, informative and gut wrenching. I will absolutely recommend this to anyone, as long as they are prepared for the detailed discussions of trauma and abuse that Janette dealt with.
