Hogg by Samuel R. Delany
DID NOT FINISH

Uh, no. This is child porn for shock value with no deeper meaning and an excuse for the author to write the n word too many times.
How does this book do anything for the lgbt community? It doesn't.

Edit: After a week or two away from it I wanted to revisit my review. I'm not changing my mind, I absolutely find this book disgusting. I wanted to see if I was missing something so I took some time to read other reviews, about the history of the book, and about the author, but I just dont think I was missing anything.

The book reads like a depraved ao3 fanfic. The MC being underage is uncomfortable, yes, and I think I would be ok with such a graphic depiction of sexual violence if I felt the author was going to go anywhere meaningful with it. But after DNFing and reading reviews, that doesn't seem to be the case, which makes it even worse.

The MC doesn't even react to the absolutely insane shit going on around him. Not even badly, just doesn't react at all. I couldn't feel for the MC even while reading through all of the vile acts going on to him and around him because I couldn't tell if the author meant for him to like it or not. Which is wild considering the MC is like, 11 years old.

It just seems like another edgy, shock-value novel with nothing to offer. Which sucks coming from a black, gay author from the stonewall era. If there was an attempt to offer anything, it fell short. It reads like "Cows": A disgusting, vomit-inducing book with over-the-top depictions, graphic violence and sex, all with what seems to be an attempt at offering a deeper meaning but ends up just being a shallow well of muck. Oh yeah, and a bunch of slurs.
