I am so grateful that the author decided to write a story revolving around Jaysan and the newborn baby he gave up for adoption. Jaysan is an omega who was kidnapped and used in the illegal fight ring, and when he was rescued he was pregnant (as many of them were) but he wanted nothing to do with this baby that reminded him so much of his pain and torment. I remember wondering if he might regret that decision down the road and I’m glad the author wondered that as well. Because I strongly believe this series needs to be read in order as each book builds upon the last, I am not going to get descriptive in terms of the worldbuilding other than to say that in this world omegas are second-class citizens and many are treated horribly. It is beginning to change (slowly) but it is still a long ways away from being an equal system.

“And Jaysan had made it clear he didn’t want a mate. He wanted a job and he wanted to be near his son, so Morris could give him both of those things. He’d be Jaysan’s boss and friend, and probably his co-parent, but not his mate or lover. Neither of them wanted a mate.”

Fate, if you believe in it, can be a funny thing. Sansbury Province isn’t small so in a million years Jaysan couldn’t have imagined that the little boy who needed a daily governor while his uncle went to work would turn out to be none other than the baby he gave up for adoption and has regretted since. I couldn’t begin to imagine the emotions coursing through this young man and to top it off Jaysan and Morris both feel the mate bond. Both men are adamant about not wanting a mate, for very different reasons, but being near each other – even if it’s just minutes every workday – makes it harder and harder to not feel something for the other.
