I Have Some Questions for You by Rebecca Makkai

it was fine, though i would hesitate to recommend it. i think the thriller plot is well-constructed and interesting, but the author tries to take on way too much, which causes it to drag and ultimately ends up diluting her message. if you found the “bean dad” episode of twitter entertaining and/or outraging, you may enjoy the large portions that i had to grit my teeth through. i also think that if you’re going to do a cancel culture storyline you should have something trenchant to say about it, which IMO makkai does not.

i agree with reviewers who point out missed opportunities to criticize the true-crime-industrial-complex; the main focus of the story is on gendered violence and rape culture.
