Kindred by Octavia E. Butler

This is adequate. It'snot scienxe fiction because the time travel is not explained technologically. However, the main thrust of the novel is how cruel life was for slaves, and certainly the life described in the book isn't pleasant, with brutality and unfairness rampant.

It's readable and doesn't get boring. If you're vigorously anti-slavery you may see a lot of vindication in this book. If you want to still feel guilty at Amerian slavery, the life descrived here gives you good reason to.

For some reason, tough, I got the idea that [a:Octavia E. Butler|29535|Octavia E. Butler|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1242244143p2/29535.jpg] wants us to think that if we aren't black we're biologically incapable of understanding the plight of the American slave. She may be right.
