I love Walt Whitman. I am always reminded why he is my favourite poet and why he influences me in the way that he does - I can only hope to one day write as delicately as he does. He is truly a poet who has changed my life irrevocably, no doubt I will still be reading Leaves of Grass when I take my final draw of breath. I cannot say that everyone should read him, though I want to greatly, as I fear that poetry is one of those things that must speak to you - I can recommend a thousand poems, and of those only one may catch your heart. Nevertheless, the poems of Walty Waltzer are astounding, and act as proverbs, at least to me and my life. I will never not quote "I am large; I contain multitudes" or "the powerful play goes on and you may contribute a verse", and I will never not tear up at the overwhelming variety of emotions that is instilled within me when I see those words written on any medium. There is something so magical about the poems in Leaves of Grass and I cannot explain it beyond my admiration for the poet and his craft.
