it’s hard to describe how this novel made me feel. the ability of an author to take something considered complex and tell a story with it, allowing the reader to examine many intricate perspectives that are so utterly human, is art in its most profound form.
the author not only centers this novel around the colonization and violence occurring against Palestinians, he also includes at the center a Jewish character who is preparing to serve in the Israeli army while forming a deep friendship and love with two Palestinian siblings. it’s moral struggle. it’s seeking to frame how we form our ideals, values, and identities. it’s a fictional narrative that offers the reader insight.
