The Emperor's Bone Palace by Hailey Turner
5.0
While I found the first book more engrossing and a few things bugged me in this one, I couldn't really give it less than 5 stars - it's still really, really good.
As with the first book, there's a lot to like - intricately created world with interesting lore, a pretty cool cast of characters to follow, zombies...
Buuut I think perhaps the pacing was off. I adore the world and (most of) the characters, but I found it hard at times to pick up the book.
There were a few things that I don't think paid off or were not taken far enough to have a satisfying resolution ().
I still find Caris quite baffling as a character, or at least the way I think she is supposed to be perceived. I like it as an idea that the chosen one wouldn't want to be the chosen one - but here we also have the wardens, we have the Clockwork brigade, we have a whole lot of very selfless and brave characters in a battle between good and evil, so to say - so it feels... off that I think I'm supposed to be on her side or at least not dislike her for a good part of the book while she's being a petulant child...
Anyway, Gary Furlong - the narrator for the audiobook, is absolutely fantastic, again.
