Wide Sargasso Sea by Jean Rhys
5.0

Jean Rhys's extraordinary exploration of the madwoman in the attic from Charlotte Brontë's Jane Eyre is a revelation. Through the spare, hallucinatory quality of her prose she captures a metaphor for the despoliation of the New World by Europeans without once losing focus on the intensely human, personal story of Antoinette Cosway. Truly a moving and compelling work of art.
