Cider With Rosie
by Laurie Lee
Such a charming book! If you love books that take place in English country villages, and you've ever wondered if life can really have been that way, this is the book for you—a memoir of growing up in an English country village. (And the answer is yes, it really was that way!) Lee’s memoir is set after World War I, when the world was changing. Change may have come a bit later to Lee's Village than to the cities, but change it did, and such a life as he had doesn't exist anymore. Everything about it sounds idyllic--even the petty feuds, and the lack of food, and something has been lost with the disappearance of this kind of village life. This was a time when a kid could be a kid, running in the woods, suffering through school, caroling in the snow for coins and attending a fete at the squire’s estate. Once again, I am left longing for a life that I never knew I was missing. Though, by now, I should just admit I know I'm missing it. It might be more appropriate to say that I'm longing for a life that is no longer possible.
