Batman Vol. 10: Knightmares by Tom King

4.0

Taken together I think Batman vol 10 Knightmares is strong. Some of the issues stand on their own, like 62 which is the meat locker nightmare. Others like 67 which is the primarily silent issue are much better as part of the whole.

I think whether or not someone likes this relies on a few things. One is that much as I like the story it’s indulgent to the format. It’s excessive, compare it to Grant Morrison’s issues where Bruce is trapped and need to fight his way out. Different take from a different run but those only took two issues. But here’s the thing. I really like these kinds of storylines and it’s a different take and different run. This story is trying to do something different and it may be excessive depending on your definition but it’s effective, at least for me.

The second thing is whether or not you get a kick out of references smuggled into the comics in the form of lines, costumes, situations, flashbacks, etc. I happen to love that stuff. Not saying it’s subtle, the comic is very transparent about its love for the Bat and it’s something I appreciate but others may not be as charmed as I am.

The third thing is the use of classic literature and poetry in the text to make a point. I like this approach but I also like the approach where a text speaks for itself and that doesn’t always happen here.

But besides those things you’ve got stellar art. Writing that may not always have the best or right pace but is very clearly passionate and trying to do something. And a wacky storyline that gives you a lot of different flavors.

I liked a lot of those flavors.

4 stars.
