I've been on a mystery/suspense book kick, and this one absolutely fit the bill. I'm especially glad that I chose to listen to the audiobook, since the thick New Zealand accent definitely made the story that much more appealing. It isn't an accent that I'm used to hearing, and rarely hear in audiobooks, but it was lyrical, beautiful, and lovely to hear. It didn't hurt that the narrator was fabulous at bringing this story to life in the most perfect way.

When Anahera returns to Golden Cove, a town she fled when she was young, both she and the town have changed dramatically, while beneath the surface, many things have remained the same. It's a poor town, struggling with alcoholism, poverty, domestic violence, and the echoes of missing hikers that never turned up. But when Miri, a well-loved young woman goes missing, everything goes topsy-turvy.

Anahera's path crosses that of the new cop in town - Will Gallagher. He's on the run from his own ghosts, ones that he can't seem to escape no matter how far he runs. And as he starts to investigate the missing girl, more town secrets start to come to light. There's a few different people who come under suspicion, but it's hard to determine who is truly at fault, especially when more than one of them have motive to want Miri to disappear. What other secrets are buried in this scenic little town?

The writing is lyrical, and the story is haunting. So many people in the town struggle with ghosts from the past, and it's juxtaposed against the natural beauty of the town itself. It kind of makes me want to visit a place like this (minus the murders, of course). But along with all the suspense, there is a sexual tension building up between Anahera and Will. I loved how everything developed, and the evidence slowly built up. It was a great story and one that I couldn't put down.
