Crying in the Bathroom
by Erika L. Sánchez
DNF
I’m quitting this book at 21%. The first couple chapters were kind of interesting, but she lost me on the essay about humor. Quoting data from random studies and lines by Chris Rock with #DeepThoughts is not really my thing. I officially quit when I got to the part where she argues that comedians and writers are more susceptible to mental illness and mania because they are more observant than other people - “We notice a lot of things other people don’t…We are a frail group of people…Why can’t I just go about my day like a normal American — stuff my face with hydrogenated fats and fall asleep watching The Real Housewives of Wherever-the-Fuck? (P. 46 on kindle)” She comes across as really shallow and pretentious to me and I don’t connect to her writing style at all.
