This book tells the story of two young women of affluence who end up as teachers in rural Colorado for a year.

I thought the premise of the book was very interesting, as I am a teacher and really enjoy history. But for me the book was tough to read for the first several chapters. These chapters are giving the background of Ros and Dorothy, and explaining how they end up in the West. The chapters seemed to be simply a list of names and one or two lines of a story that are never referenced again, so to me it was very dry and confusing.

But about chapter six or seven, when the women are heading to Colorado to take up their jobs, things get much better. The stories become richer and more entertaining, and the characters are more realistic.

But for me that didn't balance out what was missing. I found myself wanting more depth in the stories and stronger profiles of the characters, and so while the book was interesting, I don't know if I will read it again.
