The Last Concubine by Lesley Downer

3.0

I liked the book; the characters were interesting, the setting too. Yet it did not wow me, did not make me fret over their fates, so 3.5 stars.

I guess I've read similar books or seen movies about the Ooku (the inner palace) that were better suited to my taste. Perhaps my rating is due to my expectations not being entirely met - Sachi lives in the palace only for a short time before the society collapses and the old ways are gone. Her large amount of freedom is unbelievable for a lady, especially a concubine, but perhaps that is only my preconceptions speaking. It is a nicely written novel nonetheless.
