Dead Woman Walking by Sharon Bolton

5.0

Sharon Bolton is an expert at writing thrillers. The description of the story provided is that it centers on a hot air balloon crash that kills all but one female passenger. The survivor witnessed a murder on the ground while they were overhead. Initially I couldn't imagine how a story with this straightforward a plot could take up nearly 400 pages. Accounts set in present day, alternate with stories dating back to the survivor's youth. However, about a third of the way through the book, the story becomes more complex. Not to introduce any spoilers, I can say that the new storyline involves undocumented migrants to England.

The story is set in Northumberland National Park in the North of England, close to the Scottish border, and the Holy Island (of Lindisfarne). https://www.visitnorthumberland.com/northumberland-national-park
The setting is essential to the plot, and if you can find a map, it will help you find your way through the story.

This was hard to put down and I recommend it to readers who love good thrillers.
