A Kingdom of Flesh and Fire by Jennifer L. Armentrout
1.0
I'm very easy to please when it comes to YA fantasy. That's one of the reasons why I don't really understand the hype behind this book.
Is it the worst things I've ever read? No!
Does it deserve this high of a rating? Hell no!
Poppy
I quite liked Poppy in the first book. She's the typical YA heroine, but she was kind, caring and brave. I could even look past her naivity when it came to Hawke. In Kingdom of Flesh and Fire she's acting...dumb. She asks a million questions in every scene. The author decided it would apparently be better if Poppy asked about EVERYTHING instead of her actually explaining things throughout the story. What a great writing.
Her banters with Casteel are literally the same everytime. In the first book I didn't care, but 600 pages later I got tired of her thinking how much she loves and hates him at the same time. We get it girl.
Casteel
Another thing I don't understand is the love people have for Casteel. Kieran claims he's not a tyrant, yet he kills everyone who has different opinion and wants to kill a man because he doesn't like the way he looks at Poppy. What a great leader!
When he's not angry he's horny. There's no in-between. Every. Single. Time. Poppy has a weapon, or she's angry he claims how turned on he is by her violence. At one point he says he likes when she makes him bleed. No kinkshaming, but I didn't really needed to be reminded of this in every single chapter.
The scene I absolutely hated was near the end, when he drinks Poppy's blood and then makes her drink his. And she thinks it's hot! I mean...what the hell?? Since when it's sexy for a human to drink someone's blood??? This scene was so unnescessary, it just made me disgusted.
Plot
The plot is nonexisting in this book. They travel, Poppy and Casteel have sex, they travel, Poppy and Casteel have sex, they travel, Poppy drinks Casteel's blood, at 85% there's a short battle, Poppy and Casteel have sex during it, the end.
Why is this book so long, that I'll never understand...
Overall this is just boring and incredibly repetitive. The fantasy storyline would be cool if it made more than 10% of this book. Even the romance's not worth it.
