Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë
3.75
dark reflective slow-paced
Plot or Character Driven: A mix
Strong character development: Yes
Loveable characters: Complicated
Diverse cast of characters: No
Flaws of characters a main focus: Complicated

pros:
-well done critique on societal expectations about how a woman should behave. Bertha was an interesting juxtaposition with the “ideal” wife that Rochester sought, and the interpretation of her as Jane’s “bad” side is thought-provoking.
-the ending was perfectly fitting to the story and Jane’s character. She never would have been able to be with Rochester before due to the power imbalance, but now that she has money and he is disabled, she is the superior one.

cons:
-too long. The pacing felt inconsistent.
-st. John was annoying and I wish he hadn’t existed.
-incest scare
-why did Rochester pretend to be a fortune-telling gypsie in order to find out how jane felt towards him???
-some of the language used was inaccessible and I am a dumb bitch so I had to reread many passages
-the edition provided to me by the school had tiny font and no line spacing
