This was a reflective, somber story about a Japanese American girl named Katie and her older sister Lynn. Despite their age difference they are near inseparable and Katie finds herself guided by Lynn more often than her parents. When they must move from their diverse community in Missouri to a more isolated one in Georgia, their parents must work more and more to cover expenses, especially as Lynn begins to experience medical issues. This explores the life of Katie as she grows up from their lighthearted life in Missouri to a more responsible one in Georgia, and as she navigates her family and life while her sister is sick and parents mostly absent.
