Mary: The Summoning by Hillary Monahan

3.0

This book tries to evenly split between the normal lives of the girls and the Mary incident, but it could have done entirely without any kind of drama. The first half drags, despite Mary being summoned in the first chapter, and doesn't really pick up until about three quarters of the way through. There were a ton of inconsistencies with Mary; a bunch of loopholes that, when brought up, would magically, suddenly have an explanation for. I didn't especially like any of the characters, as Jess was intolerable, Shauna was incredibly bland (especially for being the main character pov), and the other girls only seemed to be there out of convenience.

That being said, it's not an awful book. It's quick and has some spooky elements (nothing that genuinely scared me, but I think I'm completely immune to the horror genre in writing). I'll read the second book because I've heard better things about it.
