Anyone who knows Josephine Tey will know to expect generalisation and judgement, and that is certainly in place here. However I think this is possibly her best book. The plot, the settings and Grant's personal experience are so well-described it seems to work on every level. And the fun made of the romanticisation of Scotland is very funny. There's a sadness to this book which partly comes from the book itself and partly from the knowledge that the author died after finishing it. She clearly planned more Alan Grant mysteries.
