'But why is it every time we hang out someone is on the brink of death? Let's just, like, go to the movies next time'
What a ride! I loved every minute of Ascension - I was so excited to be back with the cutest supernatural throuple I have ever read about! Ascension was heart-warming at times and extremely tense at others.
'Rhys's love, David had come to realise was the stone worn smooth by oceanic devotion. It had a weight to it, a heaviness David sometimes resented, but it was undeniable. When Rhys McGowan loved you, he showed it by moving a hundred mundane mountains: remaking the bed every week because David had never figured out how fitted sheets worked, or clearing the Society schedule so David always had access to the ritual room without having to ask, or being the designated driver every time, even after David had stopped drinking just because getting David home safely at the end of a long night bought him satisfaction. Love, for Rhys, was a practice, very much like prayer, something to be done every day, with quiet consistency and attention to detail.'
When S.T. Gibson said that Rhys's ambition might be his undoing she was NOT kidding. There were a few times I seriously wondered how he was going to get out of the complex mess of his own doing. However, it was really interesting to see a bit more into Rhys's point of view, and the real motives behind much of his high ambition.
'"We're just looking out for your health. You promise you'll raise your hand if you start feeling overwhelmed? There's no shame in asking for help." David nudged him encouragingly under the table, and Rhys lifted his gaze. David was giving him a look of affectionate knowing, and Moira leaned over to kiss him on the cheek. Rhys was suddenly seized with love for both of them, so strong he could barely breathe. Good enough. He had to be good enough for them. "I promise," Rhys said. In that moment, he almost believed he wasn't lying.'
I laughed, I was shook, and I melted (...for many reasons) throughout the book. I wished I could have spread reading it out across a longer period but I was just enjoying it so much and wanted to know what happened next. I also was not prepared for the end!
'If you put a gun to Rhys's head and told him to choose between telling his parents that he was a sorcerer, that he was bisexual, or that he was polyamorous, he would tell you to pull the trigger and get it over with.'
I absolutely can't wait for the next book in this series - especially more insight into Moira's story and perspective.
