The Greatest Thing by Sarah Winifred Searle
1.0

Sadly, the first thing I noticed when I started reading this was that the art style was not my fav. Not a big deal because ultimately I still rate graphic novels on the story for the most part. Winifred is having to navigate high school on her own for the first time, because her 2 best friends transferred to a private school. Luckily she isn’t alone for long because during art class she meets Oscar and April who are creatives like she is and they team up, become friends, write & publish ‘zines and stuff. The story also included themes of self-harm and disordered eating that I do not think were handled as delicately as they should have been. Mainly because I don’t think the situations were very clear and the discussions were not complex and in-depth enough. It all sort of felt vague, and that didn’t work for me. There were several other instances outside of those heavier topics that felt like they just dropped off or got quickly wrapped up, again in a vague way that overall left me feeling very underwhelmed.
