Infinite Jest
by David Foster Wallace
What a book.
It took me just more than 13 months to complete this epic event, reading 10-15 pages at a time on infrequent tram trips to work (though I sped up a little once the end was in sight).
But I wouldn’t have kept going if I hadn’t found it so absorbing, entertaining, bizarre and simply enjoyable. There are probably hundreds of pages where I don’t really know what is going on, but I enjoyed it anyway.
I think I did benefit from a love of tennis and an interest in psychology. There were a vast number of ideas that I found interesting and framed in such a way that constantly made me take stock.
Ultimately I had a lot of fun with this.
But I also can’t wait to get back to reading all the other books on the shelf that are desperately awaiting my attention.
Give it a go, if you can, but absolutely no judgment if you decide it’s not for you - it’s definitely not for everyone.
