Your Plantation Prom Is Not Okay
by Kelly McWilliams
A very informative story focusing on the modern day perceptions of plantations, while the character also works through complex PTSD and anger management. I enjoyed the nonlinear character growth of Harriet as she deals with her mom's death, and how her growing up on a former plantation has shaped her. It made me just the right amount of uncomfortable as a white reader, as we see white allyship both flourish and fail, in respect to helping Harriet cancel a white celebrity throwing a plantation wedding next door. I think this captures the nuance of judging someone right away, allowing mistakes and growth, and the importance of non-performative actions regarding social justices. Extremely highly recommend. Please be sure to seek out BIPOC reviews too.
