The Fear of Winter by S.C. Sterling

I enjoyed this read! It is a solid crime thriller with lots of action and dysfunctional characters.

The story follows 3 main characters:
Tom - a father searching for his missing daughter Megan while his marriage falls apart
Marshall - a private investigator with demons of his own
Hannah - Marshall's assistant who is haunted by the unsolved death of her sister

The three work to solve Megan's disappearance! The book kept me guessing and the author tricked me a few times with foil characters. I appreciated the fast pace of the book. I would continue the series and hope we learn what happened to Hannah's sister!

What kept the book from being a 5 star read for me was the depth of the characters. The author did a great job giving the main characters backstories, but I felt other important characters were lacking, such as Megan, Tom's wife, and Nathan. For example, Megan was kind of a mystery to the reader and it made it hard to connect with Tom's journey at times.
Spoiler Nathan wasn't fully exposed until later in the story as the villain and his arc was rushed. His role in Megan's disappearance vs. his treatment of Katie makes me think this psycho had lots more going on that wasn't explored. As a result, the ending felt rushed.
