Picnic at Hanging Rock by Joan Lindsay

dark mysterious slow-paced
  • Plot- or character-driven? A mix
  • Strong character development? No
  • Loveable characters? No
  • Diverse cast of characters? No
  • Flaws of characters a main focus? It's complicated

3.5

A bit more of a florid style than I'm used to but miss Joan would have slayed GSCE descriptive writing. I listened to the audiobook and found it kinda irritating? But to be fair posh Australian teenagers probably are. Really pretty writing but too many tangential ramblings for me, I wanted to hear about the missing girls and was a little bored by the wedding subplot that seemed a bit out of place when a full on investigation is going on? Still such a cool story and a really interesting read that I wouldn't have picked up if not for a recommendation. The ending is so sick too.
