one expects the unexpected from this author.  and he certainly doesn't disappoint here.  glorious prose, unforgettable characters, kinda short on plot, but that's ok.  besides the heartbreak, it's pretty life-affirming.  my only reservation is the chapter about the pig slaughter.  that put me off so much i didn't think i was gonna finish the book.  but after a day or so, i was able to get back in it.
