Witch Hunter by Virginia Boecker

Dunno if this was due to that I was reading the German translation of this but there were often parts I felt could still use a little editing. Some phrases sounded a bit sappy, especially some dialogue that was cringeworthy.
The book lacked depth when it comes to all aspects. I didn't find the characters believable enough; they were too stereotypical for me, or rather two dimensional. Elizabeth is faceless and certainly not a heroine who is memorable. The strongest character in my opinion was Fifer but even she's not fleshed out enough for me. I liked John, he's the only side character we get glimpses on the past, but they're just glimpses who couldn't fill the gaps of a well-rounded character. I wanted to like them all but they're lost to the world building and the plot.
The world building was great. The author did her research on Medieval England and I loved the little things that were visible and added details to the world. I liked the alternative universe stuff where the Reformation was the emancipation of witches and wizards. That's a cool idea but a good world building isn't a guarantee to an engaging plot. It wasn't complex enough for me, to be quite honest. The motivations and the goals were too superficial, and some arguments just sounded like cheap excuses.
Nevertheless, the story succeeded in entertaining me. There were parts where I didn't want to stop reading (but also, where I just couldn't bring myself to pick up the book). I'm not certain I'll read the second one but we'll see.
